Reviews for Striking Gold at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe
ThreeWeeks

“Re-creating that 1940s, downtown New York, jazz bar atmosphere, Morgan Carberry and her musicians know how to put on a cabaret show. Well chosen songs and stories complemented each other, ensuring the flow of the performance, and Morgan glides from one persona to the next with ease and style. There is no doubt that Carberry is a talent, but, there were moments when it seemed that she couldn't help herself and just had to show off the extent of her skill, even if it didn't really fit; she pulled out the tap dancing, the fiddle, had a go on the piano and even played the flute. This was, however, an undeniably accomplished performance.”

“Glamorous Morgan Carberry leads us on a journey, following her own footsteps round the world in a revue peppered with geographical landmarks related through standards such as ‘New York, New York’, ‘April in Paris’ and even ‘I Belong to Glasgow’. Morgan is an ultra-talented American, now resident in Scotland, and dazzles with her voice, tap dancing, flute, piano and violin playing in the El Dorado Cabaret, ably supported by Simon on keyboards and Jamie on Saxophone and percussion. There is even a guest spot or two to a visiting artist, giving the principal cabaret act changing and breathing space.
The audience were very warm and Morgan’s CD’s sold out at the box office, so keen were they to take a bit of her talent home with her.
She is at her best in her ‘lower key’ moments – ‘The Man Who Got Away’ and ‘I’m Always Chasing Rainbows’ were thrilling and I would advise giving the audience time to absorb these changes in tempo and mood rather than going for the ‘big money’ numbers. A good late night revue, just the job to finish a hard day at the Festival!”

A glistening nugget
reviewer: Helen Cuinn, Scotland
“Carberry slides so easily from tune to tune, genre to genre that it's a relief to hear, through the course of the show, that she has devoted her entire (young) life to performing arts. She's a pro, an optimistic, multi talented performer who dances lightly over an emotional plane and is ultimately likeable despite her triple threat. Particular highlights were forays into new musical, French chanson and a weird but impressive routine featuring vocals, music and dance (I don't want to spoil it for you so I'm keeping that vague, you'll have to see it yourself to believe it!) If you’re looking for some late night entertainment away from the hotchpotch that is the fringe, then put yourself in the hands of Morgan Carberry. This little Miss will lead you to El Dorado!”

Wonderful
reviewer: Ali Sharpe, Scotland
“Captivating, moving and entertaining. Morgan Carberry has a beautiful voice and displays an amazing array of other musical talents too. Her covers of Marlene Dietrich and Piaf are incredible. Everyone turned to each other afterwards with the same response: ‘She is so talented!’ Highly recommend you go!”
